| 1956-started as an engineer
for large sheet metal shop. 1980-was part owner and was president
of Custom Metal Products. Sold the business in 1993 and retired. My
wife and I travel throughout the U.S. by RV. Have been doing my hobby
of singing traditional country music for the last ten years. In 1997,
I was contacted by a corporation in the Philippine Islands. Started
a factory up for them from scratch to fabricate KFC kitchen equipment.
This corporation purchased the KFC franchise for the Philippine Islands.
The factory was named after me-Marchant S/Steel Fabricating Co. My
wife and I have been married for 47 years. We have four children,
seven grandchildren, and one more on the way. In October 2002, I entered
the World Senior Games in Ogden, Utah. I have always enjoyed cycling,
so I decided to prepare myself for three events. I trained myself
in the Arizona mountains at the 8,000 ft. level. The first event was
a 3-1/2 mile hill climb. I was 2nd place for the silver medal. The
second event was a 24-mile road race at an elevation of 5,000 ft.
Was 2nd for a silver medal. The third event was a 36-mile cross country
race through the mountains of Ogden, Utah. I placed 3rd for a bronze
medal. |

After graduating from North,
I attended Simpson College, where I received a BA degree in elementary
education. I married Don Fuller, and we had two daughters. I have
been a widow for the past 20 years. My oldest daughter, Nancy, lives
in Marshalltown, IA, and she has three girls. My daughter Linda lives
in Davenport, IA, and she has one girl and two boys. All of my grandchildren
are teenagers now.
We lived in Sioux City, IA; Omaha, NE; Urbandale, IA;and Waterloo/Cedar
Falls, IA before moving to Dubuque 30 years ago. Last July I retired
after working for 29 years as Registrar at Wartburg Theological Seminary.
I have had a long-standing interest in family history, so retirement
has given me more time to work on that. One of my ancestors, John
S. Dean, was one of the original settlers of Des Moines. He is one
of those who donated land for the site of the state capitol and Dean
Avenue was named after him -- (just a little bit of trivia). I recently
discovered that there is also a Dean Lake on the East Side -- but
you wouldn't want to go there because you really can't get there,
and if you did get there, you wouldn't know what to do, but hold your
nose.
I like to travel, spend time with family and friends, do volunteer
work at our local arboretum, read, and learn new things on the computer.
Thanks to the good genes I inherited from my ancestors, I'm enjoying
good health and life in general. I am planning a trip to Alaska later
this summer. |

Fondest Memories of High
School:
Eisenhower's first inauguration (first Republican president in our
lifetime)..three of us skipped school that day to watch anfd after
that bit of "hooky" had to report to Don Emanuel's office
for ten lashes with a wet noodle. I have fond memories of so many
of my classmates that I only superficially got to know when I was
in high school. Some I knew well...Norman Bone, Clair Austin and,
from grade school days at Kirkwood, Terry Crawford (he wrote in my
yearbook, "They will never have another liquid air demonstration
like ours!"...Brandon Martin (Brandon, Terry, and I played chess
at noon if I was not running the projector for the noon movie... and
it was the three of us who were delinquent for Eisenhower's inauguration.
And, last, but not least nor the first, I had a key to the Chem Lab
given to me by Mr. Lockridge. He had me updating the Periodic Table
on the wall there, and I had free access at anytime the school was
open. |
Comments (since graduation):
I have travelled the world. Lived in Northern Ireland from 1978 to
1981. I have visited my ancestral beginnings in England with my father,
have been in the home where his mother and my grandmother were born,
have been in the home (a grand estate) where she grew up. Have been
in the Middle East and in Egypt, North Africa, most of Europe, the
Far East to include Japan, Korea, Formosa (Taiwan). My memories today
are more of you, my classmates. You all have a special place in my
heart. You are loved. |
Most significant happening
in my life?
Being me. Yes, I could reminisce about this or that...even how I avoided
certain death because God did not allow me to be where I intended
to be when I thought I wanted to be. (If you have patience to listen
to this brief account, you may ask me when we see each other in August/September.)
Otherwise, a most significant happening? In my life? There have been
a few...as in more than one. The death of my mother. The death of
my daughter. The death of my father. It is natural that our parents
might precede us in death. It is not natural that one of our children
might precede us in death. Is that most significant? No, but it teaches
me, and or us, that God is in charge; we are not. If you want to know
more, ask me in September. |
