Louis Bertram McGrane

Louis Bertram McGrane was known to most people as "Bert". Bert McGrane was a sports writer for the old Des Moines Capitol and later became a successful sports writer for the Des Moines Register. He was widely recognized as one of the nation's best sports writers. For several decades, the Register's Sunday Sports Page was noted for the best football coverage. Bert was one of the Founding Fathers of the Football Writers of America. This association established a top service award to honor Bert's name, " The Bert McGrane Award." During his years as a sports writer, Bert received numerous awards and honors.
Bert McGrane worked at the Des Moines Register for 41 years until his retirement in 1964. After spending five years as a copy editor, McGrane started a writing career that brought him national fanfare. Most of recognition came from his coverage on Golf and College Football. He served for a time as the Iowa Golf Association’s president. The Bert McGrane Open is played annually at Willow Creek Golf Course in Des Moines. McGrane died in July of 1987 at the age of 90.
Awarded annually: The McGrane Award (the Football Writers Association of America’s Bert McGrane Award), which began in 1974, is symbolic of the association's Hall of Fame and is presented to an FWAA member who has performed great service to the organization and/or the writing profession. It is named after Des Moines, Iowa, writer Bert McGrane, who was the executive secretary of the FWAA from the early 1940's until 1973.
