Written by North High Alumni Association: David participated in varsity football, track, and choir at North. He earned a master's degree in journalism from Ohio University and worked in photo-journalism at The Des Moines Register until 1985 when he joined the Baltimore Sun's evening newspaper staff. As deputy director of photography at the Sun, he was credited with bringing technological advanced in media to the photo staff. He served on the Sun's news development team and was a member of the National Press Photographers Association. A brother, Charles, and a sister, Debbie, also attended North. David's parents, Woodrow and Dorothy Lewis, still reside in Des Moines. David died December 14, 2007 at the age of 57. His obituary published in the Des Moines Register: Mr. David M. Lewis, age 57, departed this life on December 14, 2007 in Howard County, MD. David, a former Des Moines resident was the son of Woodrow and Dorothy Lewis of Des Moines. David was extremely proud of his home town, community and the schools which he attended: Nash Elementary, Washington Irving Jr. High, and North High School. David was involved in choir, track, and football. He was a charter member of Jack and Jill of America Club. David received his BA degree in Journalism from Drake University and a Master of Science and Master in Business Administration from John Hopkins University. His love of photography led him to employment with the Des Moines Register, Chicago Tribune, and Associated Press. David worked for the Baltimore Sun for over twenty-six years, where he was Associate Director of Photography. He will be remembered by many journalism students whom he mentored. David is survived by his parents, Woodrow and Dorothy Lewis of Des Moines, Iowa; his brother, Charles W. (Karen) Lewis of Fountain Hills, Arizona; a niece, Dominique (David) Ponce; and a great nephew, Elijah Lewis Ponce of Laguna Hills, California. He was preceded in death by his sister, Deborah L. Lewis. He will be sorely missed by a host of family and friends. A celebration of his life will be scheduled both in Des Moines and Baltimore in January, 2008. Memorial contributions may be made to the Deborah L. Lewis foundation at the Forest Avenue Library in Des Moines, Iowa. |
