Dr. Richard Wilson Hammer
Class of June, 1945
Dr. Richard Wilson Hammer graduated from the University of Iowa as a Doctor of Medicine in 1958. Since that time, Dr. Hammer has dedicated his life to the service of others. His volunteer work includes many years of service in the area of sports medicine. Dr. Hammer has been Secretary of the Iowa Chapter of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Chairman of the Sports Medicine Committee for the Society of Adolescent Medicine, Chairman of the USA-USSR Junior Track Meet in Lincoln, NE, team physician of the U.S. Junior Track Team, and team physician of the U.S. Swimming Team. Dr. Hammer received the Phillips Performance Award, Service to Man Award, and the Friend of Youth Award. He was one of the original inductees into the Warren Harding Hall of Fame.

Richard W. Hammer, M.D., 82, died Wednesday, January 20, 2010. Born January 2, 1928 in Des Moines Iowa. Retired physician. US Marine Corps Veteran and Captain in the Navy Reserves. Graduate of the University of Iowa Medical School. Member: First Plymouth Congregational Church, Rotary Club #14, Lancaster County Medical Association, one of the founders of the Cornhusker State Games, AARP, Nebraska State Historical Society, Lincoln Council for International Visitors, served as a swimming official with Midwestern Swimming and the University of Nebraska, active in TeamMates mentoring program.

Family members include wife of 50 years, Elaine Hammer; sons, daughters-in-law, Mark and Carol Hammer, Kenneth Hammer and Elaine Mandapat, Charles Hammer and Sandra Baez; grandchildren, Jordan, Amina, Dane, Cecilia, Lila; sisters, brothers-in-law, Mary Jean and Dean Veenschoten, Phyllis and Edward Haning; brother, sisters-in-law, Robert Hammer and Susan Crowe, Clara Hammer. Preceded in death by brother Dale.

Memorial service 2:00PM Saturday, January 30, 2010 at First Plymouth Congregational Church, 2000 D Street, Reverend Dr. Jim Keck officiating. Memorials to the First Plymouth Foundation. No visitation. Cremation.
